There are two main types of spray foam, and the right one depends on the job. Closed-cell foam is denser, delivers about R-6 per inch, and acts as both an air barrier and a moisture (vapor) barrier — the DOE notes it is essentially moisture-vapor impermeable and won’t absorb water. That makes it the right choice for crawl spaces, rim joists, metal buildings, and anywhere moisture control matters, which in our climate is most places. Open-cell foam is lighter, about R-3.6 per inch, an excellent air-sealer and sound-dampener, and a cost-effective choice for interior walls and certain attics.
